Texas Music Office
Like the Film Commission, the Texas Music Office had a similar need for a new brand. The office needed a strong image for multiple digital and print marketing media types. They approached me with a general idea, incorporating the state flag with a musical symbol. I created two alternate, solid concepts using their desired framework to aid their ultimate decision.
Eighth Note
In the state-mandated flag colors of dark red and navy blue, the Music Office symbol is an eighth music note with the Texas flag flowing to the right. The new combination mark with a medium-width slab serif font stands out whether used on small bumper stickers or large pop-up booth banners.
Slab Serif
My goal with the font for the Music Office's identity was two-fold: I wanted an edgy font that still maintained hints of the state's robust and proud heritage. I also wanted it to complement, but not directly mirror, the inherent elegance in the curved lines of an eighth note. I sought fonts with serifs; in this case, slab serifs connote strength. After looking into expensive fonts from online foundries, I chose Chaparral Pro, a standard Windows font. The Music Office's in-house publications manager would have easy access to the font. Applying different weights made it versatile enough for print and web media.
